MP 1134: The Sounds of CART IndyCar at Detroit, 1990
Friday Jul 09, 2021
Friday Jul 09, 2021
Take a trip back to 1990 with the trackside sounds of the CART IndyCar Series as it raced around downtown Detroit on the former Formula 1 circuit. All of the era’s biggest stars were there with reigning champion Emerson Fittipaldi, Detroit polesitter and race winner Michael Andretti, his father Mario Andretti, Al Unser Jr, Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan, and more on the entry list.
And the best part from an audio standpoint was the variety to be heard from the 2.65-liter single-turbo V8 engines from Chevrolet, Cosworth, Judd, Alfa Romeo, and Porsche. There’s also the distinct grunt and wail from the 3.4-liter single-turbo Buicks in action around the tight 2.5-mile street layout.

MP 1131: Driving For The Worst Formula 1 Team Ever, with Perry McCarthy
Monday Jul 05, 2021
Monday Jul 05, 2021
How bad was the Andrea Moda S921? "It was so dangerous. It was all black. All we needed to do was put brass handles on the sides and it would have saved time burying me."
My friend Perry McCarthy drove for Andrea Moda in 1992, which is widely regarded as the worst Formula 1 team of all time. He also drove some amazing cars beforehand in IMSA's GTP series and destroyed lap records from coast to coast. Between the two, with an emphasis on that simply unbelievable 1992 F1 season, and the embarrassing adventures of pre-qualifying, McCarthy spins some yarns about his lowest and highest points in racing across Europe and America in a hilarious visit to the podcast back in 2017.
