MP 501: Stefan Johansson's 'Planes, Tranes, and Automobiles' Sebring Adventure
Wednesday Mar 13, 2019
Wednesday Mar 13, 2019
Stefan Johansson is half convinced the crazy adventures and obstacles he faced while trying to reach Sebring in 1984 inspired the popular 1987 movie ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles’ starring Steve Martin and John Candy.
Some 35 years ago, Johansson was doing his best to keep a shaky Formula 1 career from flaming out. Invited to race at the famed 12-hour endurance event in Florida in an aged Porsche 935 against cutting-edge IMSA GTP models from March, Lola, and Jaguar, a battle of eras was at play. Taking paying rides when offered, Johansson accepted the challenge in the Joest-built 935 arranged by Colombian gentleman racer Mauricio de Narvaez. Along with German pro Hans Heyer, the trio weren’t expected to do more than pad an obscene entry list loaded with sports cars.
Provided Heyer and Johansson made it to Sebring.

MP 491: IROC Origins with Roger Penske and Bobby Unser
Thursday Feb 28, 2019
Thursday Feb 28, 2019
The International Race Of Champions completed its inaugural season 45 years ago in February of 1974 where Mark Donohue claimed the first crown in the all-star series created by Roger Penske, Les Richter, and Mike Phelps. Using production-based Porsche Carrera RSRs, the modern greats from Formula 1, IndyCar, and NASCAR came together at the Riverside road course in California and the famed Daytona circuit in Florida for four rounds to determined the best driver in a group containing A.J. Foyt, Emerson Fittipaldi, Richard Petty, and other legends of the sport.
With help from Penske to open our podcast, followed by all manner of wild tales from three-time Indy 500 winner Bobby Unser, who placed third in 1974 while hating the Porsches, and returned to win the IROC championship in 1975 after a switch to Chevy Camaros was made, we have a fun look back at the origins of a classic series in a special edition of the Marshall Pruett Podcast.
And just wait until Uncle Bobby starts talking about cheating...

MP 469: Busby Racing Wins The 1989 24 Hours of Daytona
Saturday Jan 26, 2019
Saturday Jan 26, 2019
Team owner Jim Busby, driver John Andretti, Busby Racing crew chief Mike Colucci, and Porsche/Andial legend Alwin Springer bring their win at the 1989 Sunbank 24 Hours of Daytona to life on the 30th anniversary of their overall win in the gorgeous No. 67 Porsche 962.
The two-car effort, with the lead No. 67 entry for the late hero Bob Wollek, all-time great Derek Bell, and Andretti, was complemented by a one-off second entry, the No. 68, as a tribute entry featuring the Holbert Racing crew and a 962 chassis for Mario and Michael Andretti, in the wake of Al Holbert’s death a few months earlier.
By the end of the 24 Hour, Porsche had won its 50th race with the 962, which would also serve as Bell's final 24-hour win, and with a long delay for fog, the windshield flying off with Andretti behind the wheel, and a titanic battle for victory with Jaguar that forced Wollek to close the race running at qualifying speeds, the 1989 event is loaded with amazing stories offered by our guests.

MP 445: The Oral History OF The Fast Masters Series
Sunday Dec 23, 2018
Sunday Dec 23, 2018
Bring some of racing’s biggest names out of retirement from Indy car, sports cars, NASCAR, and even the NHRA, wedge them into 12 of Jaguar’s brand-new, ultra-rare $1.3 million road racing XJ220C supercars, then drop the ageing heroes onto the claustrophobic 0.686-mile Indianapolis Raceway Park oval and eventually its ‘roval’ as part of the first made-for-TV racing series for 50-and-older icons.
What could go wrong?
Back in the summer of 1993, the gorgeous XJ220Cs, built in England by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, were bashed and battered for our amusement like demolition derby cars at the county fair. The six-week special airing on ESPN, modeled off the cable channel’s Thursday Night Thunder concept, delivered five weeks of heat races to whittle down the grid for Fast Master’s grand finale. Quickly dubbed the ‘Crash Masters,’ it received the sport’s most accurate nickname.
On its 25th anniversary, the Fast Masters series continues to stand as one of the most delightfully unhinged racing concepts to become a reality.
Told by Terry Lingner, the series’ creator and producer, Bobby Unser, its first and only champion, and TWR USA boss Tony Dowe, who supplied and maintained the cars on behalf of Jaguar, here's the oral history of a racing series that barely survived its first event, presented as a special feature on the Marshall Pruett Podcast.
